Dangerous wrinkle treatmentsAre you intrigued by the cosmetic possibilities of modern wrinkle treatments, yet wary in case there is something somewhere someone isn't telling you? I'm going to assume you already know to always check the qualifications of any cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist who plans anything more than a moisturizung facial, right? This is by itself, not enough. Nor is a recommendation from your own GP. Many a person has died when they needn't after following the advice of a specialist recommended by their own GP. This is because GPs are generalists, and specialists are specialists. A GP will not know if the specialist is Einstein with a stethoscope or talking out of his/her fundament. A qualification does not guarantee ability, and, even if it did - the proceedure itself might have a fatal flaw in it. Don't hand over control of your body to another person when all you have to go on is the fact they are qualified. So was Doctor Mengele! You have to do your research. Luckily you have the best research tool ever invented - the internet. In the old days, anyone sufficently rich could easily silence dissent. They and their professional organisations controlled the legislature and media. Mistakes were routinely covered up in much the same way the UK Charity Commission is a cover for crooks and thieves. Those professional bodies existed, and still exist, to protect the interests of their members, and to 'reassure the public' that all is well. They do not exist for your benefit. Nothing much has changed there, but the media is no longer under the sole control of vested interests. We laugh at China and Saudi Arabia over the way it controls access to the most innocuous webpages, protecting their citizens from anything that might make them think. Don't laugh too hard! Ten years ago we were all in much the same position. If you wanted to ask me about dangerous skin treatments or medical proceedures, you wouldn't even have known I existed ask - unless I was prepared to suck up to whatever media was available. Then, if I promised to say nothing scandalous, that is, useful, they might have let me on to flog my latest book. I guess you know where I'm going with this. Before undergoing any treatment you need to check out both the treatment itself, and the proposed practitioner of it. If someone had a problem with either, there is a good chance they went online to say so. Don't let one person's bad experience alarm you unduly though. Operations inherently have risks, and anyone can have a bad reaction to anesthetic. Infection after certain proceedures is more often than not the customers fault for not following post-proceedure instructions properly, and can be treated anyway. Its as Dolly Parton said when the interviewer asked if she was afraid of what might happen when she went under the knife - "I'm more afraid of what will happen if I don't!" You have to balance what is (if you choose your proceedure and specialist with care) a negligible risk of something really unfortunate, with the utter certainty of a cosmetic tragedy, in time, if you don't. Anyway, operations aside, many skin treatments are entirely useless but few are downright dangerous. The useless ones are pointed out above (click the bolded text) and on various places throughout the site along with my preferred alternatives, so I have only two specific things to warn you about, (three if you check out my concerns about Dermalive treatment). Oxygen skin treatment.Never let your beautician use an oxygen treatment on your skin. If oxygen is forced into your skin, your skin will suppose its natural oxygen supply is more than adequate, and it will stop forming capilliaries. Those are little blood vessels that supply your skin with oxygen and nutrients. Without them you are going to be dependent on oxygen treatment for the foreseeable future. It might work short term, and I can't even vouch for that, but avoid it like the plague. I have heard all kinds of rubbish from the peddlers of oxygen skin treatment and their customers. "Ooh it leaves my skin all pumped up and cushiony!" Yes dear. For about as long as it takes your credit card to clear. In fact depriving your skin of oxygen actually increases collagen production. I don't know why this should be. Its something I found on Pubmed, the medical research site. So does exposing your skin to heat stress for 60 seconds. Heat stress would be caused by immersion in water heated to 42 degrees centigrade. (A couple of degrees hotter than a hot bath). Check with a medically qualified beautician before you try either of those. I suspect they could be dangerous. Also, when using peels and copper peptides and strong things like those, always do a patch test. These things cause irritation by design, and can get quite unconfortable.
HGH and SteroidsDon't even think about it. The health benefits are minimal and the risks appalling. One last thing, but it has to be said.. I don't suppose any of my readers are daft enough to get silicon oil injections (Not to be confused with solid silicon which is fine and used for bone augmentation). Its bad enough it was used in breast implants in bags, where everyone knows it leaks, but to inject it straight into tissues! Now the odd leak of an injectible is not neccessarily a tragedy when the substance is one that can be metabolised by your body - but silicone oil, I ask you! Yes, I know. Some people have very good results using silicone oil as a tissue filler. Well some people like drilling holes in their heads too! Silicone has a way of permeating through anything that holds it in place, then it migrates downwards>. For years it was thought to be safe as an injectible but in fact, quite often, it slowly leaves the injection site and collects in helpful little pockets, so that next time you want to go to a halloween party you needn't pay to rent a Freddy Kreuger costume! If anyone tries to sell you any of that stuff, run away. Run far far away. If you need an injectable filler go get yourself some Aquamid instead. Useless skin treatments
